Organized by Bikram Yoga BC, it was held at Capilano College Sportsplex in North Vancouver BC on an absolutely beautiful sunny Sunday. As I crested the top of Boundry Road, the baby-blue sky and snow kissed mountains took me by suprise… I had just come from Richmond where we were completely socked in with fog. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I knew that nothing was going to get in the way of my soaking up this new experience like hearty yoga towel. Upon entering the complex, I scoped out the exhibitors very briefly, paid my entrance fee, took my event brochure and proceeded to seat myself on the bleachers about 4 rows up smack dab in front of the stage. Was I as happy as a pig in mud? Ha! Do yogis like to sweat!? The event started with the Men’s Competition. There were 6 competitors ranging in age from possibly 20-something to maybe (forgive me if I’m wrong gentlemen) 40 or 50 something. Honestly, it was SO hard to tell. Two of them had graying hair but donned the body that would make a 30 year old joe jealous. You fellas looked great. As each competitor took the stage in front of the judges (and all of us) the room went absolutely silent. I’ve never heard a school gym so quiet, you could’ve heard a pin drop. The routine started with the instructions “quarter turn right” which were repeated four times until the yogi had turned a full 360. The competitor was then given a ‘go’ to start their routine consisting of 5 yoga postures: Standing Head to Knee, Standing Bow, Bow, Rabbit and Stretching.
